About Canticle Farm
Canticle Farm is a Certified Naturally Grown, not-for-profit, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm in Allegany, NY. Located along the Allegheny River, in the northern foothills of the Appalachian Mountain chain, our beautiful 10-acre farm grows over 40 types of regional vegetables (100s of varieties). The farm was established in 2001 and has witnessed continued and steady growth for more than 10 years. Canticle Farm is dedicated to community service and education regarding the benefits of safe, ecologically sustainable, locally grown produce. Our Internship Program offers the opportunity for a rich and fulfilling experience for those interested in farming or farming-related issues.
Internship Job Description
Canticle Farm interns may select from a wide variety of opportunities. Our farm has ongoing needs in the areas of marketing, education, research, and hands-on fieldwork. Marketing might include creation of marketing materials, advertising, and outside or inside sales efforts. Education interns might conduct school farm tours, off-farm presentations, on-farm education workshops, writing for local publications and/or the farm newsletter. Research might include Internet and/or telephone surveying, data and information tabulation/evaluation, and resource acquisition. Opportunities for targeted, specialized agricultural research exist but would require significant planning, preparation, and scientific guidance. Hands-on fieldwork internships could entail working with farm staff and management in the farm’s day-to-day operations. These internships are best suited for those interested in learning about the basics of small-scale, local farming. The hands-on internships would also prove useful to those who are interested in acquiring the skills necessary for successful home gardening.
Internships are very flexible. None of the internship categories (marketing, education, etc.) are exclusive and can be combined or divided as best suits the needs and skills of the intern and requirements of the farm. Internships are designed to serve the needs of those currently attending school, though enrollment at an educational institution is not necessary. Internship durations are flexible and could be conducted during summer breaks, over the course of one or two semesters, during semester breaks, or in accord with any other predetermined schedule. Hours are flexible so long as they fit farm resource availability and are likely to be productive/useful for the farm and the intern.
Internship Compensations, Hours, Etc.
Internships are very flexible in terms of compensation, duration, and hours. Compensation could include: an hourly wage, stipend, housing, farm produce, educational institution credit hours, or any combination thereof. Duration can range from a couple weeks to an entire season. Hours are also flexible but would be agreed upon in advance. Interns would be compensated in accord with Federal and New York State labor laws.
